Strengthening Regional Value Chains: Indonesia Food Security Investment Opportunities

Indonesia’s sovereign wealth fund, Danantara, announced a major strategic partnership in the protein and food security sector, unlocking an investment capacity of up to US$5 billion. The initiative is designed to bolster regional protein supply chains, reinforce domestic food security, and accelerate long-term infrastructure across Southeast Asia's agricultural sector.

Expanding Two-Way Capital & Capabilities

In August 2026, Danantara entered into a strategic agreement with JBS Group, a world-leading protein producer with extensive operations in Australia and New Zealand.

Under the capital structure framework, Danantara is providing an initial equity investment of US$2.5 billion to acquire a 25% stake in a newly established joint venture overseeing JBS’s Australia and New Zealand operations. With additional debt financing capacity, the venture can deploy up to US$5 billion for acquisitions and greenfield projects across Indonesia, Australia, New Zealand, and broader Southeast Asian markets.

This bilateral synergy creates a direct channel for Indonesian sovereign capital to back established Australian production networks. In turn, it brings advanced food processing technology, cold-chain expertise, and global distribution standards directly into Indonesia's domestic ecosystem.

Key Sectors for Investor Collaboration

As national food security priorities shift from simple commodity imports to end-to-end processing and supply resilience, several high-growth verticals are opening up for cross-border partnership:

  • Livestock & Protein Production: Expanding cattle, poultry, and aquaculture breeding and processing operations to meet growing regional protein demand.
  • Cold Chain & Logistics Infrastructure: Upgrading refrigerated transport networks, port-side cold storage, and distribution channels to minimize food loss and maintain freshness.
  • Food Processing & Agtech: Implementing advanced processing standards, halal-certified production platforms, and IoT-driven supply chain tracking.
