Paydirt's Battery Minerals Conference Indonesian Business Luncheon - 22 March 2023

Indonesian Investment Promotion Centre (IIPC) Sydney, together with KBRI Canberra and with the support of KJRI Perth hosted a noteworthy business luncheon undertaking the theme of “Developing EV Battery Industries in Indonesia” as part of the Paydirt’s Battery Minerals Conference (BMC) in Perth. The event, held from the 19th to the 24th of March, took place at the prestigious Pan Pacific Hotel.Esteemed panelists at the luncheon included Hon. Mr. Siswo Pramono, the Ambassador of Indonesia to Australia, Mr. Saribua Siahaan, Director of Promotion for the South East Asia, Australia, New Zealand, and Pacific (AASP) Region of the Ministry of Investment/BKPM, Mr. Chandra from the Indonesia Battery Corporation (IBC), and Mr. Cameron Peacock representing Nickel Industries.

The event served as a pivotal moment in shedding light on Indonesia's burgeoning investment landscape and its commitment to sustainable growth, ushering in an era of transformative change in the global drive towards cleaner, more eco-friendly technologies. 
 
The Ambassador of Indonesia to Australia, Hon. Mr. Siswo Pramono explained that Indonesia has great potential to emerge as a global EV production center, with a target of 15 million electric vehicles in Indonesia by 2030 (2 million electric cars and 13 million electric motorbikes). In this case, the Indonesian government is inviting Australian investors to be part of the development of the EV and renewable energy industry in Indonesia. 
 
Mr. Saribua Siahaan as the Director of Promotion for the AASP Region of the Ministry of Investment/BKPM said that currently, the Indonesian government is focusing on encouraging investment in the down streaming industry which aims to provide added value to commodities in each sector. In developing the EV ecosystem, Indonesia has collaborated with various investors, both from within and outside the country. With a large market demand, mineral resources, and a drive for Renewable Energy (EBT) in Indonesia, these are the key components for the Indonesian government to develop an industrial ecosystem with high added value. 
 
Mr. Chandra from IBC said that currently the government is encouraging growth in the EV sector by setting a lithium power requirement of 500,000 MT in 2026. 
 
Mr. Cameron Peacock from Nickel Industries said that transparency, efficiency, and collaboration were the keys to the success of the partnership between Indonesia and Australia. Currently Nickel Industries is partnered with the Tsingshan group of China and has successfully invested in nickel mining and refining in Indonesia.
