ASEAN Summit 2023
President Joko Widodo presides over the 43rd ASEAN Summit at the Jakarta Convention Center, running from September 5-7, 2023. With a packed agenda, including 12 sessions and participation from 22 countries and international organizations like the World Bank, IMF, and World Economic Forum, the summit is a crucial platform for regional cooperation.
On 5 September, President Widodo, accompanied by the First Lady, Mrs. Iriana, warmly greeted fellow ASEAN leaders and their delegations to officially open ASEAN Summit 2023. In his opening remarks, President Widodo stressed ASEAN's immense growth potential but underlined the need for cohesive and agile collaboration among member states. He also praised ASEAN's support for discussions on ASEAN Concord IV, laying the foundation for the ASEAN Community Vision 2045. Additionally, he inaugurated the ASEAN-Indo-Pacific Forum (AIPF), strengthening ASEAN's ties with Indo-Pacific partners. The summit's Retreat Session primarily focused on implementing the Five-Point Consensus on Myanmar and the ASEAN Outlook on the Indo-Pacific (AOIP), highlighting the region's commitment to addressing pressing issues and fostering regional stability.
Moreover, on September 6 2023, President Joko Widodo leads a series of high-level conferences in Jakarta, including ASEAN-Japan, ASEAN Plus Three, ASEAN-United States, ASEAN-Canada, ASEAN-Republic of Korea, and ASEAN-People's Republic of China (PRC), emphasizing the importance of collaboration for regional peace, stability, and infrastructure development. At the ASEAN-Japan summit, he invites Japan to boost funding for ASEAN's infrastructure, especially in the fields of connectivity and green infrastructure. While at the ASEAN-United States meeting, he calls for concrete and inclusive cooperation in creating a peaceful Indo-Pacific. Furthermore, ASEAN and Canada elevate their partnership to a strategic level, aiming to deliver greater benefits to the region.
